In 1996, an unidentified 3-year-old boy escaped from his mother, climbed a fence and fell into the gorilla enclosure.
The 20-foot fall left the boy with a broken hand and a deep laceration to his face. The enclosure was inhabited by seven gorillas. Gorillas are known to be fiercely territorial animals.
They will fight to the death to defend their families. However, one of the gorillas, named Binti Jua, which means “daughter of the sun,” approached the boy and cradled him in her arms, all while her own young child was on her back.
She then went to the edge of the enclosure and waited for zookeepers to come and collect the child. Binti handed the child over peacefully before returning to the rest of the gorillas. Binti received praise around the world and was given regular treats for the next few weeks.
The boy and mother were never identified, but the boy remained in the hospital for 4 days.
Animal behavior experts say Binti used her maternal instinct to care for the child. This may have been influenced by the fact that she had her own baby Gorilla with her at
the time.
